As the guillotine of history slices down on Trump, its blade etched “first former president to face a criminal charge”, Republicans are warning their own followers not to take Trump’s appeals for violence seriously. In doing so they have tacitly acknowledged that January 6th was a deliberate and scary assault on democracy.
At the same time they are defending Trump, as he calls for new riots in the streets.
The mental health professionals told us Trump would go unhinged.
Republicans who should have know better and who behaved as if Trump was a rational person who will take the hint and go, are now caught in Trump’s punishment for all those who ‘betrayed’ him on January 6th.
His language today is even more over-the-top than the rhetoric he used to stir up a mob on January 6.
But this time, his calls for protests before his anticipated indictment in New York have “generated mostly muted reactions from supporters.”
(New Yorkers are cool about it, because nothing fazes a New Yorker. They are vaguely aware that there is a world out there, and they feign interest in your stories, but deep inside they think it is all a rather poor joke. New Yorkers are neat people.)
This time, Trump is getting reactions like this from former Proud Boy Ethan Nordean: “F*** Trump,” he stated. Ethan Nordean, a self-described “Sergeant of Arms’’ of the Seattle chapter of the Proud Boys, was among several Proud Boys to be arrested for their role in the Jan 6th riot. Just to clear up any misunderstanding about his position, Nordean added: “F*** him more than Biden. I’ve followed this guy for 4 years and given everything and lost it all…We are now and always have been on our own.” He complained that Trump had pardoned ‘degenerates’ but left him to face 40 years in prison. He might have been referring to Trump’s pardon for Jared Kushner’s father, Charles, who was convicted of sending his sister a sex tape he made of her husband with a prostitute.
This time, far-right activists are wary of being caught in a trap, after seeing Trump’s total passivity when their MAGA colleagues went to jail for Jan. 6th.
