Racing car or terrorists blast?
Pardon this premature note, but a vehicle has exploded on a bridge I used to travel over frequently. Now all four bridges over the Niagara River have been closed.
Fox News has reported that “high-level police sources” have confirmed that the explosion was an attempted terrorist attack.
Pushing back on that, there is speculation that the car was racing down a street on the US side of the border and lost control.
Official word: The Rainbow Bridge border crossing near Niagara Falls was closed after the vehicle explosion this afternoon, according to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In a statement issued shortly after 1 p.m. EST Wednesday, the FBI’s Buffalo field office said it was investigating the explosion, which took place on the U.S. side of the border. The situation is fluid at this time, the agency said. No further details were shared.
“We don’t really know too much — just that there was a vehicle trying to come into the U.S. and they shut down both sides of the bridge,” public information officer for the city of Niagara Falls Aaron Ferguson told CNN.
Fox News reported that explosives were inside the car and its two occupants were killed in the blast.
The pressure wave from the explosion did not damage the windows of nearby cars, which throws some doubt on the power of the explosion.
A 27-year-old male was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to reports.
The NYPD and our partners have already enhanced security and the city is on heightened alert due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. A record number of travellers are expected to be on the roads and in the air in the coming days.
American agencies are warning about an increased threat to security from terrorist groups.
On a personal note, I am sorry two people died. They were either idiots or terrorists…but I repeat myself.
This is all our poor American neighbors need right now: anxiety about the Northern Border.
If it is speeding, then anxiety levels should remain high, though, as one wonders what this world is coming to…
Not all the turkeys are on the plate this weekend.
